Abéy

(Pronounced ahh-bay)

was founded at the intersection of sustainability and history, with a mission to empower individuals and communities to find sustainable solutions to social and environmental issues.

Beekeeping and honey production have a long and storied history in Haiti, dating back to the indigenous Taino people who harvested honey from hives in the forests and mountains of the country. Today, Haitian beekeepers produce some of the world's most unique and flavorful honey, but they face severe challenges due to deforestation and climate change. The deforestation in Haiti is exacerbated by charcoal production, and without alternative income sources, many people turn to this destructive practice.

Our goal is to help train people in beekeeping to provide an alternative to charcoal production while also protecting the environment. By working with beekeeping groups in southern Haiti, we will be able to help reduce deforestation by 50-60% in those communities.

Co-founded by Mirlande Hector and Junette Maxis, Abéy is dedicated to introducing the world to the one-of-a-kind flavor of Haitian honey and helping beekeepers sell their products. Every ounce of honey bought through Abéy contributes to improving the standard of living of independent entrepreneurs who rely on bee farming as their livelihood.

Abéy believes that as bee farming expands in rural areas of Haiti, people will look for other alternatives to charcoal for energy production. Mirlande and Junette are passionate about environmental sustainability, education, social entrepreneurship, and small business development.

Abéy invites you to join them on their mission to make a positive impact on our planet by supporting sustainable beekeeping and preserving natural resources in Haiti.
